Toshiba's Internship Program with BUTE

Toshiba’s Internship Program with Budapest University of Technology and Economics Promotes Advanced Research in IT and Electronic Devices

Tokyo and Budapest--Toshiba Corporation of Japan and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE), one of Hungary’s leading institutes of higher education, today announced that they have established a Student Internship Co-operation Agreement that allows doctoral candidates at BUTE to experience year-long research internships at Toshiba’s Corporate R&D Center in Kawasaki, Japan.

Toshiba’s increasing globalization of its R&D activities includes promotion of internship programs and joint development projects with academic institutions outside Japan. One of the longest established is the company’s Fellowship Program, which offers post-doctoral British researchers the opportunity to undertake research at the Corporate R&D Center for up to two years. The new program with BUTE adds a new chapter to and extends the breadth of the company’s efforts.

BUTE, one of Hungary’s oldest universities, also seeks to promote internationalization and to promote opportunities for its graduate students to gain experience in working with industry. This Internship with Toshiba is BUTE’s first ever program with a major Japanese corporation.

The program will begin to accept applications from PhD candidates at BUTE in June. The initial internship will be awarded in October 2004, and the first intern is expected to travel to Japan in late September. The work undertaken by the intern will be in either information technology or electronic devices.

Toshiba will assign the selected graduate student to a project at its Corporate Research and Development Center, the company’s central research laboratory and home to some 1,000 researchers and engineers. Among the Center’s wide-ranging research areas are information and telecommunications technologies; semiconductors and other electronic devices, including display technologies; energy related technologies; and advanced materials. Potential areas of research for the BUTE intern include speech synthesis and recognition, computer vision, and the device technologies that support these areas.

Mr. Makoto Azuma, Corporate Senior Vice President and responsible for technology at Toshiba, welcomed the new program: “Hungary has a long, rich history of scientific endeavor, and has matured great talents in both academia and industry. Promoting opportunities for our researchers to work with the young and talented students of BUTE will support us in enhancing the globalization of our R&D activities."
